123rd ride of 2016 - Wednesday, 7/27/2016

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1952.7

Today I went out about 6:15 a.m. and rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, on another glorious summer morning—sunny, and 62° at the start, 73° when I finished. I covered the 26 miles in 2:52. And I had another incentive to ride hard. For my 60th birthday next March, I want to skydive, and in investigating the company's FAQs yesterday, I discovered that they have a weight limit, a little over 10 pounds lower than I am now. So that's a powerful incentive!

In addition to exercising my body, I exercised my mind as I rode. Early this morning (6 a.m.) I read a Stephen King story ("Strawberry Spring") from an anthology of his stories (Night Shift). It references the song "Hey Look Me Over" and that lodged it in my mind. Wikipedia tells me it is from a 1960 Broadway show, "Wildcat," but I only remembered that I had heard it and knew it as a boy. During my ride today, I tried to recall the lyrics—this was a challenge, having not heard the song in 50 years! But by pulling and tugging on the phrases I could recall, eventually I was able to piece it all together.

Hey look me over, lend me an ear,
Fresh out of clover, mortgaged up to here,
But don't pass the plate, folks, don't pass the cup,
I figure whenever you're down and out the only way is up
So I'll be up like a rosebud, high on the vine,
Don't thumb your nose, bud, take a tip from mine,
I'm a little bit short of the elbow room, but let me get me some,
And look out, world, here I come!
