TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2029.6
This morning I started at 5:45, and rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park in 66° weather, finishing the 26 miles in 2:50. During the ride, my air horn ran out of air—but when I got home, whereas I have been challenged by this in the past, last time I watched Michelle carefully, and today was able to unhook it from the trike successfully, attach the pump, air it up, remove the pump, and reattach it to the trike—all without incident. So I'm happy to say I'm good to go for tomorrow's ride.

126th ride of 2016 - Saturday, 7/30/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2003.6
This morning I set off at 7:00, and had only gotten about 5 minutes into my ride when I heard a rumble of thunder to the north and west. Its direction made me quite sure it was already bypassing us, and at first I was tempted to keep pressing on. But I immediately thought (with some resignation), "Better safe than sorry," and so wheeled around and came back home, having ridden only 1.8 miles in 12 minutes. I will not be able to ride today, as it is the occasion of our big annual Borton reunion ... but that's OK. I can live with a forced day off.

125th ride of 2016 - Friday, 7/29/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2001.8
This afternoon I reached a big milestone, exceeding 2000 miles for the year—a plateau I didn't reach until October 23 last year. The dramatic improvement is only possible because last year I didn't even get my trike and begin accumulating miles until May 4, but this year, by contrast, our mild "winter" has allowed me to ride most days this year (when I was not sidelined either by travel or by mechanical issues).
Blessed with a morning visit from my dear cousins Joe and Debbie Exe, who had moved from Michigan to Arizona last year so that I had not seen them in a long time, I did not ride until 1:00 p.m. When I set out, it was 81°—a temperature that (fortunately) held throughout my ride, rather than climbing. Knowing what I needed to do to make the 2000 level, I only rode roughly two and a half round trips to Marsh Park today, rather than three—two full ones, and then a round trip to Woodland Dr., which is equivalent to about half a round trip to Marsh Park. This total ride of 23.1 miles took me 2:39.

124th ride of 2016 - Thursday, 7/28/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1978.7
This morning, for the second straight day, I rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, covering the 26 miles in a slower than yesterday—3:03 vs. 2:52. If I can do it tomorrow, as I hope to, that will put me over a big mileage threshhold for the year.
When I left this morning, at 6:30, it was 64°, and by the end, it had climbed to 74°. And I was rewarded by my steadfastness in doing that third round trip by seeing my friend, Leighann, at the park, when she waved and called out from her vehicle. I was glad that she identified herself, because although I think I might have recognized her voice, my distance vision is sufficiently weak that I would not have known it was her by sight.

123rd ride of 2016 - Wednesday, 7/27/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1952.7
Today I went out about 6:15 a.m. and rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, on another glorious summer morning—sunny, and 62° at the start, 73° when I finished. I covered the 26 miles in 2:52. And I had another incentive to ride hard. For my 60th birthday next March, I want to skydive, and in investigating the company's FAQs yesterday, I discovered that they have a weight limit, a little over 10 pounds lower than I am now. So that's a powerful incentive!
In addition to exercising my body, I exercised my mind as I rode. Early this morning (6 a.m.) I read a Stephen King story ("Strawberry Spring") from an anthology of his stories (Night Shift). It references the song "Hey Look Me Over" and that lodged it in my mind. Wikipedia tells me it is from a 1960 Broadway show, "Wildcat," but I only remembered that I had heard it and knew it as a boy. During my ride today, I tried to recall the lyrics—this was a challenge, having not heard the song in 50 years! But by pulling and tugging on the phrases I could recall, eventually I was able to piece it all together.
Hey look me over, lend me an ear,
Fresh out of clover, mortgaged up to here,
But don't pass the plate, folks, don't pass the cup,
I figure whenever you're down and out the only way is up
So I'll be up like a rosebud, high on the vine,
Don't thumb your nose, bud, take a tip from mine,
I'm a little bit short of the elbow room, but let me get me some,
And look out, world, here I come!

122nd ride of 2016 - Tuesday, 7/26/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1926.7
I was unable to ride the past two days, because of the flat tire Sunday morning, and then a busy day and excessive heat yesterday—so it was a joy to be able to return to it today. This morning, riding on a perfect summer day, I left at just past 7:00 a.m. (64° and sunny) and rode consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, finishing the 18 miles in 1:57 (and it had climbed to 72° by the time I finished). I was very glad for my air horn today, too, having the first real opportunity to use it (several times), for pedestrians up ahead of me. It is so loud, I made sure to sound it when I was still well behind them.

121st ride of 2016 - Saturday, 7/23/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1908.7
Today was a big day in terms of my riding goals. Several weeks ago I formulated the goal of riding a "century" (100 miles in one day) this fall, and I knew that in order to do that, I'd need to build up my stamina steadily and gradually, so I laid out an ambitious training program whereby I'd gradually increase the length of my long weekly rides (on Saturdays) over the course of coming months.
As part of that program, today I was scheduled to ride 3 round trips to Dexter (all on walks), for a total ride of over 60 miles—my longest yet. However, I always knew that riding a century was a real long shot for me anyway, and that the chances of my doing it were slim. And this morning as I rode, it was as though a switch in me turned off, and I thought, "NO—you don't need to do that for fitness." So I succumbed to the call to ease up, and did merely a single round trip to Baker Rd. today, finishing the 20.3 miles in 2:42.
When I left, at 6:15 a.m., it was 66°—and when I finished, it was 77°, on a beautifully clear and sunny summer day.
I am still motivated by numerical goals, however, and will now switch my focus to total yearly mileage. Last year I rode 2423.8 miles. This year I would like to ride 3500 (the massive increase is only possible because of the fact that last year, I didn't even get my trike, enabling me to start, until May 4). Today I exceeded 1900 miles for the year; this coming week I should exceed 2000; and in order to ensure 3500 for the year, I want to be at 3000 by the beginning of November, which seems quite doable in light of the fact that I rode 473.6 miles in June and am closing in on 300 miles for July despite the fact that I lost 10 days due to our trip to Georgia.

We returned home late yesterday afternoon from a driving vacation to Georgia. I was looking forward to doing two or three round trips to Marsh Park this morning, but then, as I thought about it, it seemed more prudent to break in a bit easier after a 9-day layoff from riding..
So, I settled for a single round trip, covering the 10 miles in 75 minutes.

This morning I went out at 6:30 and did a slow and easy pair of consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, finishing the 18 miles in 2:15. We are going to visit Michelle's parents today, so I didn't want to deplete my energy reserves too much.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016: 1824.4
This morning I had planned to ride 50 miles, like last weekend, in accordance with the training schedule I've planned to build my stamina for an attempted 100-mile day this fall. Because we have noon lunch plans with friends, I wanted to get an early start and leave myself plenty of time, so I left at 4:30, riding the first one and a half round trips to Marsh Park before sunrise, and all was going splendidly. But between 8:00 and 8:30, heavy cloud cover moved in, and rain seemed imminent—so, reluctantly, I cut it short and did only 4 round trips (rather than the planned six), completing the 34 miles in 3:55.
The day did at least allow me to attain a new milestone, however, going over 1800 miles for the year.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016: 1790.4
Today I was going to try to ride 3 round trips, in order to put me over 1800 miles for the year. But that milestone will have to wait for tomorrow, as I was unable to ride until 11:45, by which time it was just too uncomfortable (77° and quite humid) for a longer ride, so I settled for a single round trip, completing the 10 miles in 67 minutes. Now I'm going to reward myself with a pool session, which have been all too few this year.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1780.4
The flags I have on the back of the trike to increase my visibility have variously been called spinners, or tornadoes (by my three-year-old grandson Danny). See the video for their appearance. I only have one right now, though, as the other was ripped out and destroyed by an overhanging branch a few days ago. I am currently waiting for its replacement to arrive. However, the remaining one got a new name this morning when a woman passed me, grinned, gave a thumbs-up, and said, "I like your windmill ... it's cute!"

113th ride for 2016 - Wednesday, 7/6/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1754.4
This morning I rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, leaving a little later than I had wanted to—7:45, after first spending a little time firming up the rack that Michelle and I installed yesterday. Because of its placement, yesterday I could not tighten up the nut on the bolt that fastens the rack to the trailer hitch, so it remained a bit wobbly, but a quick trip to Meijer for a socket wrench took care of that obstacle.
Once I finally did get to shove off, it was 62° and extremely enjoyable weather for riding; by the time I had finished (26 miles in 3:06) it had climbed to 79°, and despite the high humidity, was not unbearable.
We also recharged my deplenished airhorn yesterday, so I ready to blast a warning as need today, though this was never necessary.

On this beautiful summer morning (sunny and 70° when I began at 8:15, and 77° when I finished), I just rode an easy pair of consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, not pushing myself very hard, and completed the 18 miles in a lazy 2:14. I was happy to see my friend Ron Cundiff, though I'm sure I wouldn't have recognized him had he not called out to me..
Michelle is AWESOME. (That, however, is certainly no surprise.) We just spent all afternoon (a 4+ hour stretch) in the summer heat (currently, at 5 p.m., it's 87°) putting together the rack on which I can carry my trike on the car. (They promise "easy assembly—within minutes." HA! :) ) And when I say "we" did it, I use the word 'we' very loosely—my role was largely one of observation and helping, as in the old days when I assisted Dad. At one point, I asked her if she felt sorry for him, having had to deal with me, and she laughed, "NO! I'm in it for the long haul. He probably feels sorry for ME, looking down with a grin!"

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1710.4
This is the 109th anniversary of my Dad's birth (and the 240th of our country)—we look forward to a family gathering at my brother's this afternoon.
Michelle and I had a late night last night, attending the "Salute to America" at Greenfield Village—a concert by the Army Field Band and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and then spectacular fireworks accompanied by live music. We got home well past midnight.
I was up early today (unavoidably), as always—but I managed to crawl back in and get some additional sleep, rather than doing the 6 a.m. ride I had sort of half envisioned. Accordingly, I got started at 9:30, and settled for consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, doing the 18 miles in 2:10. It was 67° when I began, and 74° when I finished.

110th ride of 2016 - Saturday, 7/2/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1692.4
I am working my mileage up gradually in pursuit of the goal of riding 100 miles in one day this fall. As part of this process, today I did my longest ride yet—50 miles, or six consecutive round trips to Marsh Park.
Yesterday a low-hanging branch across the trail snagged one of my rear flags, or spinners, and ripped it out, breaking the cord that attaches it to the pole. Though I found it and thought I had taped it back in place securely, this morning within the first mile of my ride, yet another branch tore it back off.
In the early part of the ride, I was sharing the trail with members of Run Ann Arbor, and several of them, upon seeing my empty pole, informed me, "Hey, I saw your flag back there!" And I thought I knew about where it had come off. However, late in the ride, when I looked for it, I couldn't find it. I have ordered a replacement.
Anyway, today's ride was a good test for me, pushing myself to do those six round trips. I began at 5:30 (these early morning hours are my favorite time of the day) in bracing 43° conditions, and by the time I had finished, it had climbed to 70°.
Following is a schedule I've worked up to aid me in the pursuit of my goal.

109th ride of 2016 - Friday, 7/1/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 1642.4
This morning I went out to ride just past 9:00, and intended to do three round trips. But early in my ride, when I went under a tree that hangs across the trail, the branches snagged one of my rear spinners and tore it out, breaking the cord that attaches it. I was able to go back and retrieve it, and place the (sectioned) pole back into position—but without the cord securing it, I was nervous about it falling out, and eager to get home to tape it together securely, so I limited myself to one round trip to Marsh Park. (I'm such a good rationalizer!)
Anyway, this 10-mile ride (in cloudy, cool conditions in the low sixties) took me 1:12, as I rode slowly and carefully, continuing to pivot and check over my shoulder to be sure the spinner was still there. Once I got home, I was happy to be able to get over to Meijer to procure some tape, and then return home to firm it up.
