TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2804.8
The rain which assaulted us so heavily yesterday persists—though it is much lighter today. However, combined with the drenched trail, it left me absolutely soaked following my ride this morning. I went out at 9:00, and rode consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, in a 60° sprinkle, covering the 18 mlles in 2:12.
Having reached another milestone today (2800 miles), I am moved to reflect on my progress for the year so far. It seems to me that it should be relatively a sure thing (barring mechanical or health issues) to make my goal of 3500 miles for the year, and I even have an outside shot at 4000. But this would take an enormous amount of discipline, averaging 400 miles/month for the next 3 months, and I have only ridden 400 miles in 5 of the 17 months I have so far ridden during 2015-2016.

171st ride of 2016 - Thursday, 9/29/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2786.8
We have gotten significant rainfall since last night, and it is supposed to continue throughout most of the day today. However, it eased up enough this morning so that I was able to squeeze in a ride, going out at 7:30 while sporting the poncho that I had gotten for the Michigan football game on September 10.
Since weather.com is calling for thunderstorms to arrive around 9 a.m., it seemed prudent to me to restrict my ride, in order to honor my commitment to Michelle not to ride in those conditions. So I did a slow single round trip to Marsh Park, covering the 10 miles in 1:24. Though it was raining moderately heavily when I started, much of the ride was either rain-free or in a very light sprinkle. Still, though, the poncho was a good call.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2776.8
This morning I went out just before 8:00 and rode a slow single round trip to Marsh Park, finishing the 10 miles in 1:17. And it is definitely cooling down with the arrival of fall—under mostly cloudy skies, it was 51· when I began, and 57° when I finished, so that the hoodie I wore (with shorts) felt just right!

I couldn't ride today until 11:15. I went out at that time, though, and, riding slowly, did consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, finishing the 18 miles in 2:15.
Once again today I experienced beautiful riding weather—mostly sunny, 60° when I began and 67° when I finished, and, like yesterday, it was quite windy again today (though not as severely so as it was then).

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2748.8
Because of errands and schedule conflicts early in the day today, I could not ride until this afternoon. Going out about 2:00, in partly sunny conditions, I rode another slow single round trip to Marsh Park, covering the 10 miles in just a bit under 1:15
I rode comfortably today in shorts and a short-sleeve shirt, but I don't know how much long those conditions will last. Additionally, it was quite windy today. Summer has clearly fled, and fall is now settling in.

Our handbell choir played at the 9:00 service this morning, and met at 8:15 to rehearse. Consequently, I decided to wait and ride after I got home. Going out just before 11:00, I enjoyed yet another lovely, sunny day, 60° when I began and 68° when I finished.
After a two-day hiatus from riding (yesterday our travel schedule didn't permit it, and Friday I had no good reason—just laziness), I thought it would be advisable to break back in easily, and so just did just a single slow round trip to Marsh Park, covering the 10 miles in 1:12.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2728.8
Fall officially arrived during my ride this morning (to be precise, at 10:21 a.m.). It was, however, yet another beautiful late summery day, mostly sunny, and 62° when I left at 8:45, and 81° when I finished at 12:15. I rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, riding slowly and completing the 26 miles in 3:29. I really wanted to stop after two, but I told myself, "You have a shot—albeit an outside one—at 4000 miles for the year. (My goal, however, is 3500.) If you ride three today, you keep that door open—but if you can in and settle for two, you're giving up on it."

I felt that I should have done a longer ride this morning, and really, there was no reason not to (except for laziness), but I settled for a single round trip to Marsh Park, leaving at 7:30 (when it was 55°), and covering the 10 miles in a slow ride of 1:23. At the end it was up to 62°; and at least I did achieve a new milestone today, getting to 2700 miles for the year. I'm still thinking that my goal of 3500 miles for 2016 should be quite doable, and that I have an outside shot at 4000, depending on the weather and on how hard I push.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2692.8
This morning I rode consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, completing the 18 miles in 2:26. Due to lunch plans with a friend, I had to keep the ride relatively short; however, I hope and plan to tack on another round trip this afternoon in order to push my 2016 mileage over 2700. When I started, at 8:20, it was 63°, and when I finished, about 8:45, it was 73°.

Today was still another magnificent, resplendent late summer day—unbroken, bright blue GO BLUE sky when I went out to ride at 9:30, and when I finished (just before 1 p.m.) it had climbed to 80°.
I rode three consecutive round trips to Marsh Park (for the first time since September 1—well before I was sick. Even though I rode slowly (covering the 26 miles in 3:25), it felt rewarding to be able to stick with it enough to cover that mileage.
And I forgot to mention this yesterday, but my afternoon ride put me over 300 hours of elapsed riding time for the year.

162nd ride of 2016 - Sunday, 9/18/16
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2648.8
Riding in cool (60°), intensely foggy conditions this morning, I did a single round trip to Marsh Park, completing the 10 miles in 1:17. I have to be at church earlier than usual this morning for a presentation by our handbell choir (The Rings of the Lord), and combining that with the steadily later arriving daylight as the year proceeds (I started at 7:30), I had to do a shorter ride than I would have liked. But I hope and plan to supplement it with another late this afternoon.
The fog was so severe that it kept obscuring my vision through my glasses. I'd swab them off with my t-shirt, and within a couple of minutes they'd be useless again. I actually ended up riding a majority of the ride (the first 50 minutes or so) with my glasses perched down on my nose, peering over the top of them. Given my miserable distance vision, this is not an optimal solution. But riding on the trail with which I am so familiar, and which prohibits motorized vehicles, it was a perfectly comfortable and safe solution.
After this afternoon's ballgames (the Tigers won, surprisingly—only their second victory against Cleveland in 15 contests so far this year!—and the Lions lost to Tennessee late in the game after leading for most of it. SOL—Same Old Lions), I went out and did a second day's ride, turning in another single round trip to Marsh Park in 1:13.
Also, just out of curiosity, I consulted the records I keep and found that, since I began riding round trips to Marsh Park on June 16, 2015, in the 460 days since then I have ridden 200 round trips. This is a much poorer record than I had expected, but there are two explanations—occasionally (though not frequently) I have ridden other routes, avoiding my familiar trail to Marsh Park; and then, too, with the old Traveler model that I had there were many days when I could not ride at all due to mechanical issues.

I had wanted to do a longer ride today, and set out at 11:15 with that in mind, riding once again in stunningly splendid weather ... 73° sunshine. But I hadn't ridden very far before it became evident to me that I would be much wiser to cut it short today, so I settled for a single round trip to Marsh Park, completing the 10 miles in 1:20.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2618.8
I am still decidedly subpar physically, working to rebuild my energy in the wake of my severe illness last week. Accordingly, I took yesterday off from riding, and today limited myself to riding (very slowly) consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, finishing this 18-mile ride in 2:24. The weather was once more absolutely glorious for riding—sunny, with only a few wispy clouds in the bright blue sky, and 52° when I began at 8:20, and 64° when I finished.

I am still working to rebuild my strength and energy in the wake of the severe illness that felled me last week. Accordingly, this morning I rode (slowly) consecutive round trips to Marsh Park, and at the end tacked on a couple of laps in our complex to put me over 2600 miles for the year.
I left at 9:30, in 56° sunshine, and when I finished the 18.9-mile ride, 2:44 later, it had climbed to a late summery 76°.

After the worst week of the year for riding last week, I was glad to be able to get back to it today, even though I kind of eased my way in. I wasn't able to do better than a late start (just before 10:00), and, combined with lunch plans I have with friends, it meant that I had to limit myself to a single round trip to Marsh Park, completing the 10 miles in 1:17. It was, however, another picture perfect day for riding—unbroken sunshine that was 58° when I started and 69° when I finished.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2571.9
Today I was tied up in Live Chat with technical support from Comcast all morning long, trying to resolve an email issue. But we finally got it taken care of, and I was able to set off for a ride just past noon. I am a bit sheepish about having only done a short ride on both Sunday and Monday, and then another short one today, bookended around two days off. But, as the days off were due to illness, I guess that's OK. I told myself that the important thing was to get back out there and prove I could still ride OK, rather than trying to push myself too far. In other words, don't get too rambunctious. (Or, as Dad used to put it, "all rammy and rarey.")
So, I settled once again for a single round trip to Marsh Park, covering the 10 miles (riding easily) in 1:21. It was warm, though—thankfully not quite "hot," at 78° when I started and 80° when I finished. But the high humidity made it feel like I was riding in a sauna, nonetheless.

156th ride of 2016 - Monday, 9/5/2016 (LABOR DAY)
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2561.9
I had wanted to get this Labor Day started off with a long, laborious ride. Evidently, however, I'm coming down with something—I was just dead on my feet all day yesterday, and last night I slept in a heavy sweat all night, and was constantly running to the bathroom (7 times between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.).
In light of this, I cut myself a break, and just rode a single round trip to Marsh Park, slowly (covering the 10 miles in a glacial time of 1:24). When I began, at 7:30, it was 54°, and when I finished it had climbed to 57°.

We have an extremely full day today—church at 11:00, and then travel this afternoon and evening, to Michelle's hometown to go out to dinner with my in-laws and celebrate their anniversary (51). So I knew that I'd have to ride early, and I set off at 6:15 when it was still dark and quite cool (50°), with a lot of fog overlying the area, making me glad for that trail on which I ride that prohibits motorized vehicles. I settled for a single round trip to Marsh Park, completing the 10 miles in 1:12. And by the time I finished, daylight was just beginning to be quite evident.

154th ride of 2016 - Saturday, 9/3/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2541.9
This morning I could not do my preferred early ride, due to a schedule conflict. Our small group from church was helping distribute breakfasts at a downtown church that runs this as a daily program for homeless people (mostly men). We needed to be there at 7, and left just past 9. Rather than try to squeeze in a ride before the noon Michigan football game (the home opener), I elected to come home and "nap" with ESPN's College Gameday on.
So I went out after the game, leaving a little after 3:30, and rode a round trip to Baker Rd. (Dexter), covering this 18.5 miles in 2:10. It felt odd to ride in warmer conditions than I usually do, but at least, thank goodness, at 76° it was far from hot.
One semi-humorous incident occurred on the way home. I rode out there on the sidewalk that runs along the south side of Jackson Rd., and then when I got to Baker, I crossed (at the crosswalk) and came back along the sidewalk on the northern side. When I got roughly halfway between Baker and Zeeb (which Siri, amusingly, told Christy was to be pronounced Ze-eb, as two syllables) I was riding through a canopy of branches from bushes that had overgrown the sidewalk. As I brushed through them, I emerged to see a group of three young women (it will be seen why I do not call them "ladies") who were standing by the road, some 10 feet to my right, waiting for the bus. One of them quickly pivoted her head in my direction, not angrily but having been alarmed by the sound and my sudden appearance, and exclaimed relievedly, "Dude—you scared the shit outta me!:

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2523.4
Got in a good ride this afternoon with some variety—instead of riding my usual trail to Marsh Park, I rode consecutive round trips to Saline (the intersection of Woodland Dr. and Ann Arbor-Saline Rd., a ride I can do all on sidewalks). And it was yet another outstanding day: brightly sunny, and enjoyably warm but neither hot nor humid (72° when I began, just before 1:00 p.m., and 75° when I finished, about 3:15). I rode this 21.4-mile route calmly, finishing in 2:14:32. Now I'm going to reward myself by heading out to the pool, for one of the last times (if not the last time) of the year, as it closes Monday.

152nd ride of 2016 - Thursday, 9/1/2015
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2502.0
All in all, the weather for riding this year has been spectacular. I've only missed a few days due to weather, and the vast majority of days I've ridden in sunshine. Today was yet another glorious day—when I began, just past 7:30, it was 59°, and the ride was done under sunny skies, though puffy clouds continued to move in throughout the morning, and the temperature climbed to a still-pleasant 68°.
I intended to ride four round trips to Marsh Park, but as I rode, I realized that I could exceed 2500 miles for the year (a milestone I had hoped to make yesterday, before getting the flat tire) with a slightly shorter ride. So I allowed myself to settle four three and a half round trips (turning around at Textile the fourth time), and this ride of 30.1 miles took me 3:17.

151st ride of 2016 - Wednesday, 8/31/2016
TOTAL MILEAGE FOR 2016 - 2471.9
Today was a day of mixed feelings. I set out at 7:30, hoping to ride 4 round trips to Marsh Park and go over 2500 miles for the year. I got to the park, stopped for a minute to call my sister for her birthday, and then started back, and had gone only about a minute when I began to hear the WHOOSH that told me I had a flat. I stopped and checked, and sure enough, the right front wheel was almost entirely out of air. So, pulling the trike to a pole where I could chain it up, I texted Michelle, and was able to catch her just before she left home for her Professional Development day at school. We took her there, and then I returned home with the car, got on Facebook, and was able to contact my friend Doris Granum, who offered to help with her van.
The Granums live only a couple miles from us, so I went down there, and Doris said that she had nothing on her schedule for the morning, and was happy to be able to help me. So we drove down to the park, loaded the trike into the back of her van, and then took it over to Wheels in Motion to have the tire repaired. After this was done, she took the trike to our condo so I could put it into the garage, and then returned me to her home so I could get the car, which I'd left there.
So, while it was disappointing to get the flat, things worked out beautifully with my being able to catch Michelle, and then enlist help from Doris. All in all, I am most grateful to God for His care.
I hope to still be able to ride later today, though it will now have to be after the Tigers' midday game.
After the game I had to pick Michelle up, and by the time we got home my get up and go had got up and gone. So I decided to let the longer ride wait until tomorrow.
