41st ride of 2016 - Saturday, 3/26/2016

Today, I rode at 2:00 p.m., planning to do FOUR round trips to Marsh Park for the first time since September 26, and only the third time ever. It was going very well—beautiful weather (bright sunshine and mid-forties), the trike was working well, and I was psyched up and ready to take it on. I finished the first round trip in very good time, but then, early in the second, I began to hear and feel something awry in the rear tire. I stopped to check it, and it seemed soft. Hoping I could air it up, I texted Michelle, and she came down to pick me up -- but by then it was clear to me that the problem was more severe than it had seemed at first. Since this was the same tire that Doug had cleared the way for me to get fixed only a little over a week ago (March 16) at Midwest Bike and Tandem, which is run by his friend Joel, I was thinking dark thoughts about Joel and his workmanship.
But when I took the trike up there, Joel was not in the store. The young fellow manning it promptly told me, "You might want to consider replacing this tire soon -- it seems to be getting kind of thin." And then when he extricated the defunct tube, he soon found a metal sliver that was puncturing the tire itself and had ruined the tube. He soon had it repaired, and I was on my way. By the time I got home and got the trike unloaded and assembled, it was 5:00 p.m.I briefly reflected that the extended evening daylight we are now enjoying, and the mild weather meant I could ride some more. But I figured I should probably not tempt fate, and so settled for a 10.3-mile ride today, in 61 minutes.
